What are the adaptations of a giraffe?

  1. Giraffes drink water by gulping-drinking a lot of water quickly.Giraffes are the tallest land animals, with adult giraffes growing to be between 15 and 18 feet (4.6 to 5.4 meters) tall. Because of their great height and excellent eyesight, giraffes often become watch towers for other animals. The giraffes are able to see and alert the others of approaching trouble. One of the most interesting adaptations of the giraffe is their ability to eat leaves from some very thorny trees! Giraffes produce a very thick saliva, or spit, which protects the mouth from their thorny diet. :)

  2. Erin,
Very interesting how the giraffes get their food from high leaves. Do you know if their spots serve a specific purpose? Are the spots a physical adaptation that helps the giraffe survive?

  4. I think that the spots are a physical adaptation that allow the giraffe to blend in to its environment and be camouflaged from predators.

  5. Did you know... that different species of giraffes have different spot patterns! One specie's spots changes color as they age. They also have horns covered by hair. Scientists believe that many years ago giraffes had antlers. A physical adaptation is that girrafes can camouflage, and their tough lips protect against spiny thorns.

  6. That's interesting Erin! But check this out! I know what the spots do! Patches of different sizes and colors help hide the giraffe in the African savanna.
